Today, Cincinnati loves its flying pigs, a fantasy creature based on the heritage as a pork packing powerhouse. Since 1840 Cincinnati has been “Porkopolis” when the days of slurping, grunting, reeking pigs infested every yard and alley. In 1840 there were 48 Cincinnati packing houses that employed 1,200 men producing more than $3 million of packed pork. In 1860, 2,400 men slaughtered as many as 450,000 hogs each year in Cincinnati. After 1920, pig packing numbers started to drop off and the pig stock yards finally closed in 1980. But in 1989 Andrew Leichester proposed a four-winged pig for the city’s bicentennial. So, Cincinnati decorated lots of pigs to honor their hog-slaughtering heritage!
