Tom's Town Distilling Co. is downtown Kansas City's first legal distillery since Prohibition. It was named after the country’s most corrupt political boss, Tom Pendergast. Under Pendergast, Kansas City ignored Prohibition, allowing money, jazz, and spirits to flow in the open. When a newspaperman asked Pendergast how he justified flouting Prohibition, he said, “The people are thirsty.”
